Why the Academy? The YMCA Academy is designed to work with students who need a personalized, engaging and interactive school setting. Our students benefit from a teacher-delivered curriculum, small class size, individual attention and teachers who approach different learning styles with innovative pedagogy. Whom do we serve? High-school-aged students coming from elementary and secondary schools that require experiential and relevant learning strategies. Some students may have been in alternative school settings, have been home-schooled or tutored, or may need a variety of learning and organizational strategies for success in school. Where do they go? College, Workplace, or Beyond! Students may choose courses offered at the Academy at the Applied level in Grades 9 & 10 and courses in grades 11 & 12 leading to workplace, apprenticeship or college.
The senior grades at the YMCA Academy offer a unique opportunity to high school students. The primary direction of the Academy's senior years is to focus the student in the career direction of their choice and to guide them in the selection of college level courses, cooperative education options, and job shadowing opportunities. Upon graduation, senior students may also opt for the workplace where they will be prepared to start a career of their choice. Or they may choose a combination of college level courses that can lead to a College of Applied Arts and Technology. This can be a successful option for students who may not be ready academically for University following graduation.
At the Academy, students learn about their own learning styles, new ways to study and life skills that will help them be successful. |
